Years before Cat & Crescent Beauty Lounge had a name, there was
Pretty Kitty Hair and Marble & Moon Nail Care.
Two independent businesses. Two different specialties. One shared belief: beauty professionals should care deeply about the work they do and the people they do it for.
For years, we worked alongside each other, building our own businesses and our own reputations. Clients referred us back and forth constantly, many even booked appointments with both of us on the same day, and more than a few joked that they wished they could pay us in a single transaction.
Looking back, Cat & Crescent already existed. It just hadn't introduced itself yet.
The name took us an embarrassingly long time to settle on, but when it finally arrived, it felt obvious. Cat & Crescent is the lovechild of Pretty Kitty Hair and Marble & Moon Nail Care—a business that grew naturally from two established careers, a friendship, and a shared vision for what a Beauty Lounge could be.
One of our favourite parts of this story is that, long before we met, our lives had already brushed past one another more than once.
We'd unknowingly lived in some of the same places, shared mutual connections, and crossed paths without realizing it. Years later, after we finally met through family, the friendship came easily—as though we'd simply picked up a conversation that had been waiting to happen.
Before long, our coffee dates, dinners, and weekend visits naturally drifted toward the same subjects: our industries, our clients, education, business ideas, and the kind of space we wished existed. Somewhere along the way, it became difficult to tell where friendship ended and shop talk began. Looking back now, Cat & Crescent was being built in those conversations long before we ever signed a lease.
By then, we'd both built successful businesses with loyal clients and reputations we were proud of. We loved what we did, but we increasingly found ourselves working in environments that no longer reflected the standards we believed our clients deserved.
We wanted a space where professionalism and personality could comfortably exist together. Where education mattered. Where technical precision and artistic expression were equally valued. A place where clients felt listened to instead of rushed, and where beauty professionals respected both their craft and the people sitting in their chairs.
Eventually, our conversations shifted from "Wouldn't it be nice?" to "What if we actually did it?"
We promised each other that if the right opportunity appeared, we'd take it, and when it finally did, we definitely didn't hesitate.
The original plan seemed simple enough: finish our tenancies, move into the new space, and get back to work.
Instead, we found ourselves helping transform a fully gutted commercial unit into Cat & Crescent Beauty Lounge.
The months that followed became a blur of contractor meetings, inspections, design decisions, permit discussions, supply runs, furniture assembly, endless problem-solving, and painting what felt like a million miles of purple baseboards by hand. Alongside an incredible team of tradespeople, supportive family and friends, and a landlord who believed in the vision as much as we did, the Beauty Lounge slowly took shape.
The space wasn't purchased. It was built.
There were redesigns, unexpected setbacks, and more moments than we can count where the finish line seemed determined to move farther away. Through it all, we stepped away from our regular income for 6 months because we believed in what we were building enough to keep going anyway.
Looking back now, it all feels a little surreal. At the time, it mostly felt like just another Tuesday. Long story short; we survived.
From the very beginning, we knew exactly how we wanted the space to feel: professional without feeling stiff, creative without feeling chaotic, beautiful without sacrificing function.
Our very first purchase, before we chose a single paint colour, was a vintage purple brocade loveseat that still lives in the lounge today. It quietly became the thread that tied everything else together.
Purple has always been both of our favourite colours, but we also love what it represents: creativity, imagination, wisdom, transformation, artistry, and just a little bit of magic. Somewhere between that first loveseat and what felt like endless feet of freshly painted purple walls, the vision slowly became reality.
Every finish, texture, fixture, and detail was chosen intentionally because we believed the space itself should reflect the same level of care as the work happening inside it.
The result is the place we'd spent years imagining over coffee, over dinner, and in countless conversations about what beauty services could feel like when they're done thoughtfully.
The compliments that mean the most aren't necessarily about the décor—although we certainly appreciate those.
They're the ones from clients who tell us they're happy to see us thriving. The people who walk through the door and immediately understand why we spent so long building this place. The ones who tell us, "This place feels like you two."
Cat & Crescent wasn't created because we simply wanted to own a business.
It exists because we believed there was room for a different kind of space; a Beauty Lounge— where curiosity is encouraged, questions are welcome, technical precision and artistic vision carry equal weight, and every client is treated with genuine care.
We built the kind of place we wanted to spend our careers in. Fortunately, it turns out we weren't the only ones looking for it.
